Advice following dental extraction

A blood clot in the socket is essential for good healing; therefore please:
  • DO NOT rinse out on the day of the extraction
  • DO NOT suck or touch the wound
  • DO NOT exert yourself
  • AVOID alcohol
  • AVOID smoking

1.
Be careful not to bite your lip, cheek or tongue while they remain numb

2. The day after your extraction, dissolve a teaspoonful of salt in a cupful of warm water and gently rinse your mouth. Repeat 4-5 times a day for at least 3 days until the socket is well on the way to healing

3. If bleeding starts again, make a sausage-shaped pad with a clean fabric handkerchief and, bite on it firmly for 30 minutes whilst sitting quietly

4. If bleeding persists telephone the practice number to obtain advice

5. Cover your pillow with a towel as some bloodstained saliva may dribble during the night

6. Some pain from an extraction wound for a few days is not unreasonable. This should be controllable with normal doses of Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. If severe pain or signs of infection were to develop contact the practice for advice

7. Occasionally small bone fragments from the healing socket may come to the surface and will eventually be lost. Do not worry about this, but if they should be particularly troublesome contact the practice for advice

8. Sometimes after a difficult extraction a bruise may eventually appear on your face. This will gradually move down and subside and is nothing to worry about.
