Immediate dentures
What are they?
Immediate dentures are dentures that are provided immediately following the extraction of the teeth they are replacing.
Why are they used?
They are used in cases where one or more teeth require extraction and to prevent an unsightly gap. A denture is provided straight after the tooth or teeth have been extracted.
How long do they last?
Immediate dentures are only temporary. When a tooth has been extracted, the socket takes time to heal fully. During this time, the gums that had supported the teeth shrink and change shape. This is a natural part of the healing process. As the shrinkage occurs, the immediate denture will become a much poorer fit. Consequently, the immediate denture may need to be relined, or a new denture may need to be provided, 3 to 12 months after the immediate denture has been placed.
