Older Children and Teenagers
Eat a healthy balanced diet containing;
Plenty of high fibre carbohydrate foods (wholemeal bread and pasta and brown rice are best)
Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables — but do not eat fruit on more than two occasions per day as it is acidic.
Leave gaps between meals — avoid snacks as far as possible as these increase the rate of decay.
Avoid too many convenience foods these tend to contain sugar and highly processed starch together with salt and fat. In excess these are not good for dental or general health.
Water, milk or tea without sugar are the best drinks between meals.
Do not drink too much fruit juice or ‘fizzy’ drinks — these are acidic and can cause erosion of teeth. They are best drunk chilled, with a straw and swallowed quickly — not ‘swished’ around the mouth.
Athletes who use high-energy sports drinks should swallow these quickly and then rinse the mouth with water if possible.
